The Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Scale Nodes observatory will have profound ramifications for the manner in which scientists, engineers, and educators conduct their professional activities.

However, the most far-reaching effect may be a significant shift in public attitudes toward the oceans and the scientific process. The real-time data and high-speed communications inherent in cabled observing systems within the oceans will open entirely new avenues for the public to interact with the natural world and experience sea-going research as it is happening.

In 2011 the Ocean Observatories Initiative will add an Education and Public Engagement (EPE) team that will take advantage of the cutting-edge technology and combined science and education vision of the OOI. The EPE presentation made in November 2009 at the OOI Science Community meeting may be downloaded from this webpage.
