The early design and development phases of NEPTUNE Canada were nurtured and encouraged by collaborations among the NEPTUNE Partnership, led by the University of Washington. Members included the University of Victoria, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and CalTech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
In 2003, NEPTUNE Canada received funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, with additional support from Provincial and Private sources. In 2008, the backbone cable loop was laid on the northern portion of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. Installation was completed and operations began in November 2009. Data are available from the NEPTUNE Canada website and transmitted to a data archival system at the University of Victoria. As with the U.S. observatory, NEPTUNE Canada is designed for a 25-year lifetime.
Continuing collaboration between the U.S. and Canadian cabled observatory efforts is anticipated and will strengthen ocean-observing capabilities in the Northeast Pacific Ocean
