Elevator deployment for navigation calibration

Elevator deployment for navigation calibration

This platform called an elevator is a simple way to send instruments and sampling devices to the bottom of the ocean during ROV operations. The yellow spheres contain the floats that enable the elevator to come back to the surface when an acoustic signal is sent from the ship for the platform to do so. During this deployment, a USBL beacon (one Jason's navigational tools) is being lowered for calibration before we begin our dives at Axial Seamount. Photo by Katherine Turner and Carlos Sanchez.
