Michael Welch designs mechanical and instrumentation systems for oceanographic and underwater environments. A veteran of 20 field operations in the Arctic, he has planned logistics, served as an ice camp manager, supervised equipment operation, and trained personnel for and participated in under-ice diving operations. He has designed much of the hardware for APL-UW's arctic underwater tracking systems and other tracking systems such as the U.S. Navy's Behm Canal system near Ketchikan, AK. He has participated in several medical engineering projects, including design of surgical implements and devices for medical and pharmaceutical applications. He is Chair of the University's Diving Control Committee and is a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Washington. He is a qualified Scientific Diver for the University of Washington and the Applied Physics Laboratory.
