Doug Luther is a physical oceanographer whose research has dwelt on the phenomena that transport energy through the oceans, producing impacts on water properties and fluid energetics far from source regions. The episodic nature of many of these phenomena attracted Luther to the observatory concept that makes possible long observations at temporal and spatial resolutions not easily accessible to more traditional expeditionary or battery-limited ocean observation paradigms. Luther served on, and sometimes chaired, advisory committees to OOI’s predecessors, DEOS and ORION. He joined the OOI RSN team to promote and help develop the water-column presence of the cabled observatory concept. Luther is Professor of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
