Colin Sandwith's research centers on failure analysis, marine corrosion, corrosion mechanisms, and materials science. He is an expert on O-ring seals and helped write the Navy's reference manual on interference seals and connectors for undersea electrical applications. He is also an expert on fiber-optic electromechanical cable. He specializes in inspections of fleet sonar systems to document aging and in failure analysis, by autopsy, of recovered systems to evaluate their design, manufacture, materials, operation, maintenance, and reliability. Sandwith teaches two engineering courses at the University and is a fellow of the ASME, a past section chairman, and life member of ASM. He has been a member of the Applied Physics Laboratory since 1974 and of the University since 1966.
