The Arizona State University (ASU) "Oceanographers from Desert" onboard ENLIGHTEN '10 are exemplars of the kind of researchers who will use cabled observatories to conduct oceanographic experiments from land. Although far from the ocean, scientists in Arizona or other landlocked locations will be able to run experiments from their computers using the real-time, two-way capabilities of the RSN.
